FLA is the format for source material which can be opened and edited in the Flash application. Also known as *.fla files, or simply Flash game source files, they are the files which game developers create and work on when designing and building a new game. Once the game is complete and tested, the FLA file is compiled into an SWF file (often pronounced swiff) which can then be embedded into a website.

If you want to add a game to your website you have several options. Firstly you can get a free game from many online sources, download the SWF file, and embed it into your site. The problem however is that game then promotes the game owner’s site and brand with links and logos, which take visitors away from your site.

Your second option is to create a game yourself, or have one developed for you. This gives you total control over the game, how it looks and plays, and also allows you to put your own links and logos into the game to promote your brand and site. The downside of course is that either you need to learn Actionscript and Flash development, which takes many months, or hire a developer which can cost many thousands of dollars.
